I arrived in Phnom Penh, and spent the rest of the day in the city, roaming about with nothing planned. Most of my itinerary for that day was based upon a No Reservations episode that I recently watched, so my very first stop was the Central Market for some noodle soup!
Also headed down to the National Museum and Russian Market.
The National Museum was pretty small, and filled with artifacts from the Angkor era. Sat in the garden for quite a bit and applied what I learned earlier on during the semester about memory formation and heritage preservation through what was displayed, and really wanted to talk to someone from the museum about it but I couldn't find anyone, which left me a little disappointed. But it was pretty interesting overall.
The Russian market(where the Russians used to shop!) was okay. It didn't help that it was my first day there and I wasn't for souvenir buying so I just roamed around aimlessly. Went back there on the last day for proper shopping though!
I like to take pictures of traffic signs. (See: my HCM city post)
Made a mental note to take photos of all my tuktuk drivers for that day. Don't really understand why I did that because FILM IS EXPENSIVE. But made for some nice shots, I guess.
I also sort of mastered the art of bargaining with them:
Driver: Tuk tuk for you??
Me: How much to ___?
D: $3.
Me: .... $1!
D: Noooo, noooo, very far.
Me: Oh, motor cheaper? Ok, I take motor. *Walks off a little*
THEN HE WILL AGREE TO $1.
Met some nice people at my hostel but it was a pity I was leaving the next morning so I couldn't hang out with them!
But yeah, one day in Phnom Penh was already quite overwhelming with the dense traffic and constant touting and not quite the break from the city that I was seeking.
